Description

Tradescantia is a clump-forming, upright to arching perennial typically reaching 12–24 inches tall and spreading 12–18 inches. From late spring into early summer, it produces clusters of three-petaled, cup-shaped flowers in shades of blue, violet, and purple, often with yellow stamens that add subtle contrast. Flowers open in the morning and close by afternoon, creating a dynamic display throughout the bloom period.

The strap-like, lanceolate foliage is medium to dark green, forming dense clumps that provide strong textural interest in the garden. Foliage is semi-evergreen to deciduous depending on climate, and new growth emerges in spring to refresh the plant’s appearance. Tradescantia is ideal for woodland gardens, borders, pollinator plantings, and naturalized areas, offering long-lasting color, easy maintenance, and a soft, flowing texture.
