Description

Liatris is an upright, clump-forming perennial typically growing 2–5 feet tall with a 1–2 foot spread. From mid- to late summer, it produces dense, spike-like inflorescences of small, tubular flowers in shades of purple, violet, and lavender, which bloom from the top downward. Flowers are highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, providing vertical interest and extended pollinator support in summer and early fall gardens.

The narrow, grass-like foliage is medium green and forms tidy basal clumps that accentuate the striking flower spikes. Foliage is deciduous, dying back after frost, and the plant’s vertical form creates a strong architectural accent in mixed borders. Liatris is well suited for perennial borders, prairie-style gardens, pollinator gardens, and naturalized meadows, thriving in well-drained soils with low maintenance.
